Our work addresses the predictability of carbon absorption by ecosystems across the globe, particularly in dry regions. We compare 3 different models, including a deep learning model that can learn from past environmental conditions, and show that this helps improve predictions. Still, challenges remain in dry areas due to varying vulnerabilities to drought. As drought conditions intensify globally, it's crucial to understand the varying impacts on ecosystem function.

We use anomaly detection to automatically find patterns in seismic data that may signal dangerous mass-movement events such as landslides, glacier collapses, or debris flows. Because such movements are rare, our approach reduces the amount of data that must be analyzed to find them, whether by experts, semi-supervised methods or clustering procedures. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach by mining for mass movements in Switzerland and Greenland.

Vegetation plays a fundamental role in regulating Earth’s climate on time scales ranging from seconds to millions of years. Here, we develop and test a new vegetation model that uses evolutionary principles to predict vegetation structure, functioning, and diversity under environmental conditions fundamentally different from the present. Using the model in combination with fossil data from Earth's past may help to better understand the response of vegetation systems to environmental change.

Using a global land model, we show that increased soil organic carbon improves water retention in the root zone and reduces runoff, particularly in dry, sandy regions. Although hydrological changes are modest, they are systematic and suggest co-benefits for vegetation productivity and ecosystem resilience in water-limited areas.

We aim to improve early landslide detection and monitoring by automating signal segmentation of Sentinel-1 radar interferograms. We first compared how different experts map mass-movement related signals on interferograms using ten case studies, identifying dataset uncertainties and limitations. We then trained and evaluated deep learning approaches to perform segmentation. Finally showing that models can achieve results comparable to expert variability while improving efficiency.

Mechanistic vegetation models serve to estimate terrestrial carbon fluxes and climate impacts on ecosystems across diverse conditions. Here, we demonstrate and evaluate the rsofun R package, which provides a computationally efficient implementation of the P-model for site-scale simulations of ecosystem photosynthesis. Bayesian model fitting to observed fluxes and traits and evaluation on an independent test data set indicated robust calibration and unbiased prediction capabilities.

Avalanche detection systems are crucial for forecasting, but distinguishing avalanches from other seismic sources remains a challenge. We propose novel autoencoder models to automatically extract features and compare them with engineered seismic features. These features are then used to classify avalanches and noise events. The autoencoder feature classifiers exhibit the highest sensitivity in detecting avalanches, while the engineered seismic classifier performs better overall.

Natural disasters often damage buildings and threaten lives, especially in areas with limited resources. To help improve emergency response, we created a global dataset called BRIGHT using both optical and radar images to detect building damage in any weather. We tested many artificial intelligence models and showed how well they work in real disaster scenes. This work can guide better tools for future disaster recovery and help save lives faster.

Particulate methanesulfonic acid (MSAp) is vital for the Arctic climate system. Numerical models struggle to reproduce the MSAp seasonal cycle. We evaluate three numerical models and one reanalysis product’s ability to simulate MSAp. We develop data-driven models for MSAp at four Arctic stations. The data-driven models outperform the numerical models and reanalysis product and identified precursor source-, chemical-processing-, and removal-related features as being important for modeling MSAp.

This study assesses the performance and explainability of a random-forest classifier for predicting dry-snow avalanche danger levels during initial live testing. Accurately measuring snow height is key for modeling approaches in climate science, snow hydrology, and avalanche forecasting. Erroneous snow height measurements often occur when snow height is low or changes, for instance during snowfall in summer. We prepare a new benchmark dataset with annotated snow height data and demonstrate how to improve the measurement quality using modern deep-learning approaches. Our approach can be easily implemented in a data pipeline for snow modeling.

Through an extensive global dataset of leaf nutrient resorption and a multifactorial analysis, we show that the majority of spatial variation in nutrient resorption may be driven by leaf habit and type, with thicker, longer-lived leaves having lower resorption efficiencies. Climate, soil fertility and soil-related factors emerge as strong drivers with an additional effect on its role. These results are essential for comprehending plant nutrient status, plant productivity and nutrient cycling.

For many safety-related applications such as road management, well-documented avalanches are important. To enlarge the information, webcams may be used. We propose supporting the mapping of avalanches from webcams with a machine learning model that interactively works together with the human. Relying on that model, there is a 90% saving of time compared to the "traditional" mapping. This gives a better base for safety-critical decisions and planning in avalanche-prone mountain regions.

Ecosystem manipulative experiments are large experiments in real ecosystems. They include processes such as species interactions and weather that would be omitted in more controlled settings. They offer a high level of realism but are underused in combination with vegetation models used to predict the response of ecosystems to global change. We propose a workflow using models and ecosystem experiments together, taking advantage of the benefits of both tools for Earth system understanding.

LSTM outperforms other models, even for new locations, suggesting its broad application. Yet, challenges remain in predicting diverse ecosystems globally due to varying plant and climate factors. Our work enhances understanding of Earth's complex ecosystems using advanced models.

In our study, we investigate the reproducibility of human judgement for size estimates, the mappings of avalanches from oblique photographs and remotely sensed imagery. Identifying drought legacy effects is challenging because they are superimposed on variability driven by climate conditions in the recovery period. We develop a residual-based approach to quantify legacies on gross primary productivity (GPP) from eddy covariance data. The GPP reduction due to legacy effects is comparable to the concurrent effects at two sites in Germany, which reveals the importance of legacy effects. Our novel methodology can be used to quantify drought legacies elsewhere.

Knowing where avalanches occur is very important information for several disciplines, for example avalanche warning, hazard zonation and risk management. Satellite imagery can provide such data systematically over large regions. In our work we propose a machine learning model to automate the time-consuming manual mapping. Additionally, we investigate expert agreement for manual avalanche mapping, showing that our network is equally as good as the experts in identifying avalanches.

A fully data-driven approach to predicting the danger level for dry-snow avalanche conditions in Switzerland was developed. Two classifiers were trained using a large database of meteorological data, snow cover simulations, and danger levels. The models performed well throughout the Swiss Alps, reaching a performance similar to the current experience-based avalanche forecasts. This approach shows the potential to be a valuable supplementary decision support tool for assessing avalanche hazard.

The Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition surveyed a large number of variables describing the dynamic state of ocean and atmosphere, freshwater cycle, atmospheric chemistry, ocean biogeochemistry, and microbiology in the Southern Ocean. To reduce the dimensionality of the dataset, we apply a sparse principal component analysis and identify temporal patterns from diurnal to seasonal cycles, as well as geographical gradients and
hotspotsof interaction. Code and data are open access.
